Love and Torture: My endoscopy experience
Dear Readers:
If you had an endoscopy, you can relate to this. If you have not, then you may not.
I have had two endoscopies in my life – was was torture and the other was just a sleep.
First – Valentine’s Day in 2006 at Beth Israel South – NY; Second – Dr. Alan Raymond – Kips Bay NYC
First experience – right from a horror film – Hostel meets ER.
2nd time around – very pleasant, great staff, and I got a Juicy Juice and animal crackers afterwards!
In a moment, you will understand why I call this post – Love and Torture.
Heartburn can make you feel you are suffering a heart attack. Thus, it prompted me to see a doctor. God willing, I still have a few more years on this earth and I just want to make sure, I can help improve chances.
Anyway, I had my first endoscopy at Beth Israel – South on Valentine’s Day. I was told to drink something before hand. I should have asked. I trusted it was something to knock me out. Guess what? It was not. I was FULLY awake while having the procedure and I saw my innards on the screen. I thought I was in a scene of Hostel. I was literally held by two physicians – one holding each leg while I was gagging, kicking, and screaming. My mom was waiting for me at the other wing and heard my screams!!
It was Valentine’s Day and I was in no mood to eat chocolate that night…
I went to the same clinic a year later for followup – I was afraid to go sooner. I was told by the doctor, who was the director of fellowship – that after my experience – the doc’s were traumatized with my kicking and screaming – the hospital changed its procedure and now requires every patient to be knocked out. GREAT. I was the guinea pig.
3 years later, I got serious heartburn and was afraid to go back to BI. So my lovely Dr. Lennart Belok (great patient care) recommended me to Dr. Raymond. I had it yesterday. It went so smooth and woke up when the procedure was done. I never felt it.
I hope you learned something from my little experience.
So do you now understand why I called this post, “Love and Torture”?
